Novena to St. John of the Cross

Dear Friends,

Please join us in prayer to our Holy Father St. John of the Cross with the prayer below and a reading each day from his poem "The Romances". It is our tradition to meditate on one of the nine sections each day of the novena. We read it each evening at Vespers then say the prayer together.

May He intercede for your intentions and help us all grow in love of God in preparation for the solemnity of the Word Made Flesh Himself.

Prayer to St. John of the Cross

O seraphic St. John of the Cross, the ardent love which burned always in your heart led you to see all things only in God and to seek only His glory. It was to increase this love and thus unite yourself more closely to God that you led such a penitential life. I beg you, inflame my heart with a love like yours, so that I may have the courage to mortify myself and give myself generously to the practice of virtue. Thus may I truly love God with all the fervor of which I am capable. Amen.

  1. Thank you for the Novena Prayer to St. John of the Cross . The word “practive” near the end might be a typo: ‘to the practive of virtue”; should it be practice?
    God bless us all.
Have a blessed, joyous Christmas, New Year!

Thank you for letting us know of the typo. It has been corrected. May you have a blessed feast of St John tomorrow! Are you, by chance, a Carmelite, or have a devotion to St. John of the Cross (or both)? God bless you.
